A Report on the Intellectual Tradition of Self-Generating Systems of Information: with an Elaboration on the Formal Syntax of the Absurd
"The story is the paradigm. Factual statements are specialised derivatives of fictitious ones. The biologist who describes the structure of cells in the digestive system of nematode worms doesn’t care whether anyone’s listening or not. He’s describing it for its own sake, because this is how those cells are. Isn’t he? Whereas you might say that a story is an inherently commercial enterprise, even if no money changes hands. Its function is to sell you something, and even if it’s not some moral lesson, or some opinion or viewpoint it has at the very least to sell you itself."
- Michael Frayn
"In this way, unfortunately, did the authority of the learned retard and fetter the progress of truth."
- F.A. Pouchet
Five men and one woman perform specialized tasks within a closed system. Inventing and speaking text from various stimulii, they feed it into the sculptural human-machine. As the information is transmitted, errors appear and meaning is scrambled. Eventually a single text reaches an autocue. Spoken out loud in the earnest style of a news presenter, the text reaches it's poetic conclusion and is re-incorporated into the loop.
A live installation, created by Common Sense
Performed by Milton Schorr, Jason Potgieter, Thembani Luzipho, Jon Keevy, Adrian Galley, Stan Wannet & Leila Anderson
Commissioned for Live Art Festival [ZA] 2012
Also exhibited and performed at Commune.1 Gallery [ZA] 2013.
