Boundaries of [Human] Nature
I drew a spiral on a map, starting in the room in which I was born, and walked it in the real world. Observing, talking and exploring - equipped with a self-made map and a goPro camera - I studied my home through walking it.
The project was a subjective investigation of a Cape Town locale, a place of starkly segregated neighbourhoods separated from each other by psychological, economic, historical and topographical borders. In close proximity, different worlds co-exist in unsettling equilibrium. Using the possibilities of a spiral shape to trace timelines into the past and the future, I walked as a stranger in my own home. The work was a self-reflexive journey in which simple decisions (to walk left or right, cross an uninhabited area or turn back) connected to more complex struggles: walking alone as a woman, the pervasive exploitation of black labour, white suburban paranoia, ideas of ownership, possession and guilt within landscapes of incredible natural beauty.
